Maeve O Reilly

Maeve O’Reilly is a lecturer in veterinary nursing and Bioveterinary science in Athlone Institute of Technology, Ireland.
Maeve graduated with first class honours in Veterinary Medicine from the University College Dublin in 2002. From 2002-2014 Maeve worked as a small animal veterinarian performing a wide range of medical and surgical procedures on domestic animals while based in veterinary practices in Preston, England (2002-2004), Dundalk, Ireland (2005-2007) and Limerick (2007-2014). In 2014 she started lecturing on the Veterinary Nursing and Bioveterinary Science programs in Athlone Institute of Technology, where she continues to lecture to date. She completed a Master’s in Adult and Further Education, graduating from University of Limerick in 2018 with first class honours.

Maeve is a lecturer, at higher education level, in the field of veterinary nursing and bioveterinary science. She delivers modules in Veterinary Pharmacology; Animal Breeding and Genetics; Veterinary and Bioveterinary clinical Laboratory Techniques; Veterianry Anatomy and Physiology; and Bioveterinary Parasitology to veterinary nursing and bioveterinary science undergraduate students and has delivered continued professional development (CPD) lectures to qualified veterinary nurses. Maeve contributes to the development of both the veterinary nursing and bioveterinary science programs in AIT and is currently a course co-ordinator for the bioveterinary science program.

Maeve uses a combination of lectures and practicals for teaching and also engages in field trips, and animal handling sessions. She is involved in the assessment of student placements and writes and grades a range of both practical and written state examinations. Maeve’s recent Master’s in Adult Education focused on the use of Audience Response Systems in veterinary nursing education and she continues to use this tool to improve the student experience in her classes.

Maeve is the current secretary of the Midland’s Veterinary Clinical Society where she is actively involved in arranging continued education events for veterinary practitioners and veterinary nurses. In addition to attending and co-organising the local clinical society evening meetings she attends a range of Irish and international conferences. These have included the Cattle Association of Veterinary Ireland (CAVI) conference, the Irish Equine Conference, the British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA) conference, the Southern European Veterinary Association (SEVA) and WSAVA congresses. Maeve also is a member of the Veterinary European Transnational Network for veterinary Nursing Training and Education (VETTNET) and regularly attends the annual VETNET conference.
