Abstract
This study explored the musings of young adult ESL learners as they embarked on a project which transformed their routine learning process into one that challenged their role as passive learners, smashed their assumptions about language learning and coaxed them into speaking the language confidently and finally let them be in charge of their own learning process. The complete transformation of the students, as realized through the entries in their reflection portfolios and observed during the execution of the project, adds testimony to the virtues of project-based learning as an effective teaching approach of the 21st Century. Rooted in qualitative tradition, this study analysed data from students' reflection portfolios, field notes taken during the execution of the project and interview transcripts to evaluate the effectiveness and the impact of project-based learning on a group of reluctant learners. The study reported enhanced motivation, improved engagement in learning and renewed confidence besides a positive attitude towards language learning among the participants. Suggestions for future research are also recommended.
