Introducing the Pedagogic Innovators Project

Chrissi Nerantzi, Manchester Metropolitan University (United Kingdom)

Abstract

This contribution is an exploration into the individuals that bring about pedagogical change and innovation in higher education, their beliefs, attitudes, values and practices. This is the focus of the Pedagogic Innovators project. It explores conceptions of pedagogic innovation in the context of practice, curricular design and students’ development. What are the enabling and prohibiting factors for academics and other professionals who teach or support learning in HE for becoming pedagogic innovators? If risk-taking plays a key role in innovative teaching [1], why are not all taking them?

In an increasingly complex and challenging world, there is an urgent need to understand how higher education can better promote and support pedagogic innovation. The findings of this research will be used to create knowledge assets and good practice for the future to better understand, support and nurture pedagogic innovators, maximise their contribution within an institution and the sector more widely to bring about collective growth and transformation.

Colleagues from Manchester Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom, and other institutions nationally and internationally, are invited to participate in this study in a variety of ways including via social media. Collaborations with researchers across Europe are established for cross-cultural fertilisation. The main data collection methods used are visual, and include drawings, rich pictures and models. These methods have been shown to enable a wider spectrum of expression and reflection [2] [3], and are used for this project to also create a visual resource gallery featuring works that depict pedagogic innovators.
The project was launched via a joined-up Learning and Teaching in Higher Education tweetchat (#LTHEchat) and #BETTchat in November 2015. This contribution focuses on the first findings. During the presentation, delegates will be invited to share their thoughts and experiences around pedagogic innovators and pedagogic innovation and discuss opportunities for the future.
