Sustaining Technical Education Programme as a Re-Branding Tool for Re-Positioning Nigeria in the Global Technological Competitiveness

Abstract
Technical education is that aspect of education which leads to the acquisition of practical and applied skill as well as basic scientific knowledge. The goals of technical education as stated in the national policy on education (2014) include: Provide trained manpower in applied science, technology and commerce particularly in the sub-professional grades; Provide technical knowledge and vocational skill necessary for agriculture, industrial, commercial and economic development; Give training and impact the necessary skill leading to the production of craftsman, technicians and other skilled personnel who will be enterprising and self –reliant; and Enable our young men and women to have an intelligent understanding of the increasing complexity of technology; among others. The role of technical education in national economic and technological development cannot be over emphasized, considering the need for trained workforce capable of living up to technological change in the nation industrial sector. This provide the reasons for sustaining technical education programme as a re- branding tool for repositioning Nigeria in the global technological competitiveness. Therefore, this paper focuses on sustaining technical education programme as a rebranding tool for repositioning Nigeria in the global technological competitiveness. It discusses reasons for sustaining technical education, challenges in sustaining technical education, reasons for rebranding. It went further to look at technical education as a rebranding tool, reasons for repositioning Nigeria in the global technological competitiveness and concluded with few relevant recommendations.
