Examining the Relationship Between Cognitive Flexibility and Basic Empathy Levels of Students

Abstract
The purpose of the study is to explore relationship between cognitive flexibility and basic empathy levels in terms of some variables in the view of high school and university students. These variables are birth order, reading frequency, parents' education level, socio-economic status and sex. Research was conducted in the central districts of Van and Yüzüncü Yıl Universty. Students participating in the study are 439 high school and 208 university student. Cognitive flexibility and basic empathy scale was used in this research. Pearson product-moment correlation analyses, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and t-test were used to analyze the data. The findings of the study are there was significant relationship between cognitive flexibility and basic empathy, it was seen that there was a significant relationship between cognitive flexibility and cognitive empathy which is a subscale of basic empathy. In addition, it can be said people with higher frequency of reading have higher levels of cognitive flexibility and higher levels of empathy. Girls have more empathy levels than man.
