Abstract
The present research will investigate the dependence of lexical mistakes, made by upper-intermediate and advanced level university students, on various sociolinguistic factors, which include gender, language proficiency, duration of learning English, visits to English-speaking countries, major, usage of reference tools or electronic translation services and others. The results will be obtained by means of a questionnaire, completed by the students, whose project proposals will be examined.
The analysis of the lexical mistakes will be carried out on the basis of the Russian Error-Annotated Learner English Corpus (REALEC), where they are divided into two main groups: word choice and derivation. Their further subdivision will allow us to study frequency, weight and cause of the mistakes of different types. The gathered data will be used in order to apply the linear multiple regression model and conduct the factor analysis through the principal component analysis. The expected results of the research will include the qualitative and quantitative description of the mistakes, interpretation of the regression model and will offer tips for training vocabulary to specific groups of learners.
