Teaching English to Young Learners using Disney Collector Youtube Videos

Abstract
Today, in many countries where the first language of education is not English, demands for English are rising. The reality faced by teachers of young learners in this kind of environment is that due to children’s short attention span and their limited exposure to the English language, teachers need to find interesting ways to develop their students’ proficiency. Unfortunately, in under resourced areas, teachers often struggle to come up with compelling ways to engage their students.
Disney Collector Youtube videos are a great way to expose young learners to English and to ignite their liking for that language. When used properly, they help to build vocabulary, develop listening skills, improve pronunciation and stimulate language production through creative speaking. As they are presented by a native speaker who uses authentic language, they offer the children quality exposure. Besides, they are a whole lot of fun since they use Disney characters children are familiar with and can relate to. These videos are easy to access as they are free. In addition to that, Disney Collector has a large variety of videos depending on the age, gender and interest of the children. Teachers can then be sure to find the right video that will resonate with the type of students they have.
This session will give teachers of English as a foreign language an overview of how these short videos were incorporated into children’s language classes and how they engaged those young learners by stimulating their interest. It will showcase ways to effectively select a Disney Collector Youtube video and design activities based on it for young EFL classes.
