Abstract
Our planet has been continuously facing serious pollution problems sucha as: air, soil and water pollution in most of its countries due to an irresponsable production and consumption of different kinds of foods, goods and services which are not really necessary for us. We are also having difficult times regarding poverty, hunger and health. Despite of the great efforts made by most institutions around the world, these problems seem to be endless because people are not aware about them. It is really essential to inquire information about the knowledge and concerns that people have on this subject, as well as the activities they usually carry out in order to diminish these problems. On the understanding that young people are the ones who will take important desicions about the care of our planet in the future, this research paper aims at identifying the attitudes and habits that univesity students have in order to help the environment in their hometowns, as well as analyzing the impact of the school or the family on their knowledge and understanding of sustainable development. The study was carried out through a qualitative approach with a 15-item interview. The participants were 15 university students from different faculties of the y University of Veracruz in Poza Rica, Mexico. Findings suggest little knowledge about the real meaning regarding sustainability and a low level of good attitudes and habits towards this subject.
