Abstract
This study aimed to determine the utilization of Mathematics Pre-Service Teachers of reading comprehension in problem-solving in terms of understanding the problem, devising a plan, carrying out the plan, and looking back. This aimed as well to discern their levels of proficiency in reading comprehension in terms of interpretation, details, use of information, clarity, and mechanics. There were seven Mathematics Pre-Service Teachers from Cotabato City State Polytechnic College who were involved as study’s respondents. A mixed-mode of quantitative and qualitative research designs was employed since the study wanted to determine how the respondents utilize their reading comprehension skills in solving math problems. Furthermore, phenomenological analysis and focus-group discussion were also used to gather, analyze, and interpret data.
A problem-solving skill test and a survey questionnaire on the utilization of comprehension in problem-solving were used to determine the extent and manner of respondents’ use of reading comprehension in problem-solving.
The study then revealed that it was utilized by them in terms of understanding the problem, devising a plan, carrying out the plan, and looking back but they have difficulties in adequately translating English phrases and statements into mathematical expressions and equations because of their poor reading comprehension and low foundation in problem-solving.
