Hoong-Chor Chin

Prof. Chin is the Associate Head (Academic) of the Dept of Civil and Environmental Engineering as well as the Director of Safety Studies Initiative at the National University of Singapore. He holds a PhD in Transportation Engineering from University of Southampton and an M.Eng and B.Eng in Civil Engineering from the University of Singapore. He has served as Assistant Dean of Engineering and Deputy Head (Undergraduate Programs) in the Department of Civil Engineering.

Prof. Chin is a Transport and Road Safety expert specializing in transport systems modelling and simulation, transportation planning, congestion management and road safety assessment. He has presented and published more than 100 papers in international conferences and journals as well as several chapters in books related to Transportation Planning and Safety.

A Professional Engineer, he has undertaken numerous consultancy work on traffic simulation, transport planning and road safety audits for MNCs and government authorities.He has also consultant to the Asian Development Bank, UN-Habitat and Cities Development Initiative for Asia for several overseas projects.

Professor Chin is an innovator in both teaching and professional work. He was awarded the UK Institution of Civil Engineers’ Webb Prize for his innovative work on Bench-marking Road Safety Projects. For his innovation in teaching methodologies, he has won the Faculty of Engineering Innovative Teaching Awards in 2002 and 2011.
