Emer Ring is Head of the Department of Reflective Pedagogy and Early Childhood Studies at Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick, Limerick, Ireland. Emer graduated from Carsyfort College of Education [National University of Ireland] as a primary school teacher in 1981. She subsequently graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from the University of London in 1993; a Master’s in Education from St. Patrick’s College, [Dublin City University] Dublin in 2001; a Master’s Degree in Autism from the University of Birmingham in 2004 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 2010 from St. Patrick’s College, [Dublin City University] Dublin.

Emer previously worked as a mainstream primary school class teacher, a literacy and numeracy support teacher and a resource teacher for children with special educational needs at primary school level. Emer worked with the Schools’ Inspectorate of the Ministry for Education in Ireland from 2001 to 2011 at Senior Inspector Level. In that role Emer evaluated education provision in schools at all levels in Ireland; engaged in a range of national research projects; provided advice and support to the Ministry for Education in relation to policy and practice in the area of special education and assisted in, and provided evidence as a witness in legal challenges to Departmental policy related to the education of children with special educational needs

Emer now lectures on the Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Care and Education Programme (BAECCE) and the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) programme at Mary Immaculate College, Limerick and also supervises students at post-graduate level. Emer has a particular interest in exploring provision internationally and in that context has engaged directly with provision in Italy, United Arab Emirates and Scotland. Emer has recently been joint principal investigator in two national research projects: An Evaluation of Concepts of School Readiness among Parents and Early Years Educators in Ireland, commissioned by the Ministry of Children and Youth Affairs and An Evaluation of Educational Provision for Students with Autistic Spectrum Disorder in the Republic of Ireland, commissioned by the National Council for Special Education.
Areas of particular interest to Emer are early years’ education, special education policy and practice, autism, research and evidence-based practice in Education.
