Ona Flindall is an architect and researcher with the Wood/Be/Better group at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO), an interdisciplinary and international research project aimed at increasing the use of wood as a building material in urban areas.

Ona has been involved with a number of design-build educational programmes and initiatives. In 2011 she was part of the student team that designed and built the RAKE gallery in Trondheim, Norway, which was nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Prize in 2013. She ran the design-build student workshop TreStykker from 2011 to 2012, which built Naustet (the Boathouse), a music stage on the Oslo waterfront that has been included in a number of international architecture publications. Her architecture diploma project ‘Three Stops along the NorthSeaCycle Route’ also realised a prototype build in the form of a shelter structure for long-distance cyclists.

In 2014, she founded the ‘Architecture students in Practice’ (Arkitektstudenter i HurtigPraksis) initiative that aims to bridge the gap between architectural education and practice through an extensive program of miniature internships, office seminars and professional discussions.

An International Relations graduate from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, Ona spent 4 years in the UK charity sector before migrating to the field of Architecture. During this time she worked as a coordinator for the Europe funded initiative “Equal shares for all” helping young and disabled people break down the barriers to education and employment. She also spent two years as project coordinator and trainer with the educational charity CEWC-Cymru (Council for Education in World Citizenship-Wales) and the Welsh Centre for International Affairs (WCIA).

Areas of interest: Architecture education, design-build, vocation based education, student led initiatives, use of timber in urban areas.
