Sarah Lavery is a Teaching Fellow and Depute Director of Undergraduate Teaching and Learning in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Strathclyde, with specific expertise in teaching pedagogy and leadership.
Sarah graduated in Civil Engineering from the University of Glasgow in 2013. Since then, for the last 10 years, she has worked in the Civil Engineering Industry, Further and Higher Education. Sarah has a PgCert Learning & Teaching in Higher Education and has gained Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
From 2013 to 2015 she worked as a Graduate Design Engineer in Civil Engineering Consultancies. In 2015 she moved into her dream job of teaching, and worked in a college for 3 years, and then in 2018 started working for the University of Strathclyde in the teaching job family.
Sarah is an expert in curriculum development in the field of Water Engineering and Work-Based Learning, focusing on the creation of excellent blended learning and flipped classroom environments. For 5 years she has been on module lead roles, where she is responsible for course design, the assessment and evaluation cycle and the management of teaching teams. She is currently module lead on multiple Water Engineering modules, both in the Graduate Apprenticeship and Undergraduate Degree Programmes. Sarah also supervises dissertation project students, providing mentorship and support.
Sarah is the Depute Director of Undergraduate Teaching and Learning, coordinating, and chairing the Undergraduate Staff-Student Liaison Committee meetings throughout the academic year to champion a 360-degree approach to student feedback. She is also the lead of developing the Professionalism, Ethics, Diversity, and Inclusion thread as requested by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) for accreditation of the Undergraduate Degree Programme. She actively mentors several members of staff in the department, providing ongoing on-the-job training and support.
Sarah’s passion for motivating others and inspiring the next generation of engineers is demonstrated through her commitment to her STEM Ambassador role. She has organised numerous events in schools over the span of her career.
