Stephen Bezzina is a Research Support Officer at the Department of Artificial Intelligence at the Faculty of ICT at the University of Malta. His research interests include the application of Artificial Intelligence to playful and game-informed approaches, such as game-based methodologies and gamification. In addition to his role as a research officer, Stephen is also pursuing his PhD. His doctoral research is centred on the application of Artificial Intelligence to gamification in Mathematics Education. Specifically, he's studying how this technology can improve student motivation, engagement, and ability to achieve learning outcomes. The goal is to use this research to improve the ways Mathematics is taught to students, potentially making it more engaging and accessible. Before his PhD journey, Stephen earned a Master of Science degree in Digital Education from the University of Edinburgh. During this programme, he specialised in the study of games and digital assessment, which has provided a solid foundation for his current research. Stephen has also worked as an Education Officer in the Ministry for Education and Employment in Malta. His role involved overseeing diversity, cooperative learning, and digital literacy. The insights gained from this role have been invaluable, helping shape his current research interests and giving him a strong understanding of the practical aspects of education.
