Problems of Technical Writing encountered by Computer Science (CS) students at University of Botswana (UB)

Abstract

Most of the science disciplines require that the learners be conversant with knowledge and skills of technical writing and as students in a science discipline computer science (CS) students at UB are no exception. The discussions of this study is about establishing the problems that CS students encounter in technical writing. The study examined the technical writing errors that the students make in their report writing that can impact the marker’s comprehensive understanding when reading the report. Errors looked at included logical and sequential organization of grammatical and sematic that students made in their reports as well as the concise use of appropriate action verbs that will bring out the functionability elements of that are relevant to report topic discussed.
The research method used a mixed research method. A corpus of forty three industrial attachment students’ project reports from the 2017/18 academic year were analyzed. To triangulate the result analysis the researchers also conducted interviews and classroom observations.
The discussions will conclude with possibility of drawing up a technical writing sample model that can be utilized to assist students to minimize errors in technical writing in department CS at UB.
