How to Stage a Theatrical Production of a Spanish Play with 0 Prior Experience and very Minimal Budget

Martha Alexander, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (United States)

Abstract

This poster presentation highlights some key considerations for staging an amateur (i.e., faculty and student) performance of a play in a foreign language on a university campus, with a bare-minimum budget and zero prior experience directing, acting, or producing on the part of the faculty organizer. The poster will describe this Teaching Assistant Professor´s first foray into the production of a comedy in Spanish: Celso Lucio and Enrique García Alvarez´s El palco del Real (or The Box Seats at the Opera), that was performed on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill at the end of the Fall 2018 semester. Highlights include: securing a location for the production and for rehearsals, obtaining volunteer actors, planning for rehearsals, set design, procuring lighting, procuring historically-appropriate wardrobe and hairstyle, reactions of the student actors, and impressions of the play´s reception.
The poster will also include what items were purchased and cost of the production.
