The Use of ICT in Project-Based Teaching in Higher Education

Panayiota Hadjiconstantinou, Cyprus University of Technology (Cyprus)

Abstract

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) has progressively acquired a prominent role in teaching and learning, especially in Higher Education as it is believed to be beneficial in many ways. It can be said, that if used wisely ICT tools assist teachers in developing their students’ 21st century skills required, including the 4 Cs – Communication, Collaboration, Critical thinking and Collaboration (Happ, 2013). ICT tools were used to complete various project-based learning (PBL) tasks, which are instructional models based on the constructivist approach to learning. PBL entails the construction of knowledge with multiple perspectives, within a social activity, and allows for self-awareness of learning (Duffy & Cunningham, 1996).
The presentation will demonstrate projects conducted during last year in EFL classrooms, in Higher Education. More specifically, the presenter will discuss (1) how ICT tools were used, both, by the students and the teacher, (2) the whole process from the idea to the final artifacts, demonstrating both, the teacher and the students’ roles and (3) the final products (a) a printed product, which was a cook book that was sold to the public for the support of students with socio-economic problems (b) videos on social issues

Keywords: ICT – Information and Communications Technology, PBL – Project-based Learning, EFL – English as a foreign Language.
