Victoria Safonova, a renowned applied linguist, course-book writer and curriculum planner, is a professor in the Department of Linguistics, Translation and Intercultural Communication at Lomonosov Moscow State University who has developed a sociocultural approach to language teaching and learning.

Victoria Safonova obtained the degree of the Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences (equal to PhD in Education) in 1981 from Leningrad Pedagogical Institute and the degree of the Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences in 1993 from Lomonosov Moscow State University. In 1993 she set up and headed a new department of Foreign Languages and Cultural Studies at the Federal Institute for Professional Development of Educators, Education Managers & Administrators in Russia. In 1998 prof. V. Safonova established the Research & Development Centre “Euroschool”, an independent & nonprofit research organization, aiming at intensifying interdisciplinary researches in the field of language education in the context of a dialogue of cultures and civilizations and creating innovative methodological and educational literature with the view to global trends in the development of language education and Russian national educational heritage and priorities in the humanities. In 2013 she was invited to work at Lomonosov Moscow State University and since that time she has been a professor in the Department of Linguistics, Translation and Intercultural Communication of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Area Studies.

As a RF participant and coordinator or an expert Victoria Safonova has been involved in many international projects , including CE international projects among which were the CE project “Language learning for European citizenship” (participated in 1994 - 1997), the CE project “A Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: learning, teaching, assessment” (participated in 1995-1998), the CE The European Language Portfolio (participated in 1998-2004), and the CE European Portfolio project to extend the set of CEFR descriptors (in 2015-2017). In 2018 she was invited as an expert to the CE launching conference “Building Inclusive Societies through Enriching Plurilingual and Pluricultural Education (Strasbourg 16-17 May 2018) and then since August 2018 she has been supervising and coordinating the work of the international team on the project “Developing a Multicultural Pedagogical Package of Evaluation Materials for Assessing University Students’ Academic Mediation Skills” aiming developing good practices of implementing the CEFR Companion Volume outcomes into language education. She is a frequent speaker at international conferences and workshops , and visits about six or seven countries every year.

Victoria Safonova is a professor in the MA programmes in FL Teaching and Intercultural communication and supervises doctoral students in language methodology, testing methodology, methodology of mediation in professional learning at Lomonosov State University. About 25 PhD students successfully defended their thesis under her supervision. She often acts as a visiting professor at Russian universities and Eastern-European universities. She is also a member of the Editorial Boards of peer-reviewed academic international journals “Bulletin of Moscow University. Series 19: Linguistics and Intercultural Communication” and “Eurasian Forum” (Russia), “Russian Studies without Borders” (Bulgaria), “Language Teaching Research Quarterly”.

She has written over 340 articles, course-books and monographs including Learning languages of International Communication in the Context of the Dialogue of Cultures and Civilizations (1996), Communicative Competence: Modern Approaches to its Multilevel Description in Didactic Purposes (2004).
