Bridging science and humanities through the soundscape

Alessandra Calanchi, University of Urbino (Italy)

Abstract

The soundscape is an important component of human lives. Its growing importance is acknowledged both on theoretical and applied levels. Sounds are relevant elements of the natural complexity, vehicles of information and communications, and play a crucial role in the evolution of individual species and their aggregations. Also, the soundscape has philosophical, psychological, and artistic implications, to such an extent that it has recently entered such domains as education, archeology, architecture, and literary criticism. It is my aim in this paper to propose a model for teaching literature through the soundscape in university courses, from merely detecting the figures of speech (onomatopoeia, synesthesia, etc.) to deep-focus analyzing  vocabulary, cultural context, scientific background (acoustics, neuro-sciences, social sciences), and individual/collective/gendered dynamics of listening.
