Abstract

mascil (http://www.mascil-project.eu) aims for promoting a widespread use of inquiry-based science teaching (IBST) in primary and secondary schools. We are convinced that if inquiry-based science teaching is connected to the world of work mathematics and science will become more meaningful to students. When doing inquiry-based tasks, students work like scientists or technicians and by doing so, they acquire competencies they need for their future professional and personal lives as active citizens. In order to implement inquiry-based teaching and to connect mathematics and science education to the world of work, mascil follows a holistic approach by carrying out a variety of activities, including the development of materials and running professional development courses. Our professional development courses for pre- and in-service teachers started in 2014 and will continue to the end of the project in 2016. Teachers from vocational education and representatives from the industry support these training courses.17 Partners from 13 European countries are working together to implement mascil ideas in their countries educational systems by engaging teachers, stakeholders and policy makers on various levels. National and European advisory panels are to bring together stakeholders to advise partners throughout the project, whilst policy makers are be reached by workshops and policy papers. A midterm and a coming up final conference were and will be used to inform all target groups about preliminary and final outcomes. All New Perspective in Science Education conference participants are invited to come to the final conference. This will be held in Freiburg, Germany 7-8th of November 2016. The presentation will focus in lessons learned in Austria.
