Abstract

Social networks have become an important part in the life of college students and the people in general. Some authors consider them significant tools to maintain contact with family and friends, especially when physical contact is not possible due to the geographical distance. However, others have argued that the Internet and online social networks have contributed to the social disconnection and the development of feelings of isolation. This research explores the possible association between psychological well-being of college students and intensity of use of social networks (Facebook). A quantitative analysis with and exploratory approach was used. We surveyed 200 students from a private university in Mexico. Results showed a negative association between the number of daily hours the students dedicated to Facebook and the subjective psychological well-being (-.241) and the material welfare (-.192). In addition, a positive association (p <.05, .153) between the number of photos that students share on Facebook and the subjective psychological well-being was found. These results, although exploratory, warn us about the importance to further investigate the relationship between perceived psychological well-being of college students and their use of social networks.
