A Diagnosis of Chemistry Students’ Inability to Report Accurate Average Titres in Volumetric Analysis in Oyo State Nigeria

Abstract

It has been observed that chemistry students in senior secondary schools in Nigeria have difficulty in reporting accurate average titre during volumetric analysis. Efforts to solve this problem have not yielded desired results because teachers and other stake holders are yet to understand the causes and pattern of this pedagogical menace in details. This study therefore, determined qualitatively the misconceptions of students in volumetric analysis that is responsible for the recording of ridiculous average titres. The Sample for the study was 50 students selected from two secondary schools in Ibadan metropolis. The data for the study were collected using field notes and interviews. The data were analysed using constant comparative method. The study duration was about 10 weeks. The result of this study reveals that students’ inability to report accurate average titre during titration in volumetric analysis is can be attributed to factors such as self or human centred thinking, bad apparatus, self-contradictory view, inaccurate instructions given by teachers as well as lack of basic procedural knowledge required for volumetric analysis. Based on the findings, it is recommended that teachers should ensure that they observe students at the performance stage of volumetric analysis so as to check practices that students engage in that makes them to obtain wrong average titres.
