Abstract

It has always been evident that implementing latest and innovative approaches in education provides a way to improve quality education anywhere in the world. In today’s classroom, many student faces major barriers in learning because of fixed and one size fits all curricula which do not produce the preferred academic achievement gains for all learners in the 21st century. Teaching for science concepts entails that the teacher should design a learning atmosphere that delivers a solid foundation of detailed knowledge and clarity about the basic concepts to all type of learners.

To deal with these issues, this research study was conducted to improve teaching and learning practices in the area of science concepts of grade 3 to 5 in a charity based school in slum area of Islamabad. This study is based on action research in which Universal Design for Learning (UDL) was used as a pedagogical framework to enable all learners to boost their enthusiasm for learning while gaining the knowledge and skills to grasp over the desired outcomes. In this study, digital technologies were incorporated to support UDL principles for the effective implementation. A sample of 30 students were selected along with 2 science teachers. The quantitative and qualitative data was gathered through interviews, psychological test (VARK for learning style), and pre/post-test.

The results of this research study shows that the intervention of UDL as a pedagogical framework enhanced cognitive thinking skills and had positive effect on student’s learning. Beside, student’s engagement in learning, instructor showed a positive attitude towards adopting UDL as a pedagogical framework for differentiation instructional strategies
