New Perspectives in Science Education

'Students on STEM: More Hands-on, Real-World Experiences,’ a U.S. report compiled by the Amgen Foundation and Change the Equation, found that low-income students have the fewest pathways to science careers. Students from low-income communities are less likely to know someone whose job involves biology and are not as likely to have access to critical career-planning resources.¹ The inequitable distribution of STEM education opportunities continues to persist, exposing the systemic factors that prevent students from thriving. In response to this, private foundations have increased their focus on creating long-term solutions to help educators nurture the future generation of scientists. The Amgen Foundation is one of many private foundations that continue to play a critical role in how we deliver education and enhance equitable learning. Our approach is to directly address the barriers that prevent all students from experiencing the magic of science. More specifically, the Foundation provides high-quality, customizable resources at no cost to students around the world in partnership with wide-reaching entities such as Harvard and Khan Academy. Private foundations and educators around the world should continue to collaborate as the way we deliver education continues to evolve.
