Developing Students’ Competencies of Reading Hypertext in Legal Language and Translation Studies.

Abstract

Multimedia resources provide students with valuable visual and textual information concerning their professional field. Information which comes with hypertexts could be both useful and superfluous or even confusing for students. Hypertext presents challenges to many, particularly for students reading specialized literature in foreign language. On the other hand hypertext could be of importance for translators to access the information clarifying the meaning of specialized terms and concepts. Training reading skills of hypertext in foreign languages requires new models of teaching, developing training practices and reading strategies. The study of hypertexts and other resources of law used as learning materials require comprehensive approach to reveal all aspects of information - linguistic, legal, cultural, stylistic and contextual to derive the meaning and message to be translated. The system of exercises has been developed and introduced into LSP studies. Theoretical and cognitive aspects of hypertext relevant to teaching and learning legal language and translation are analyzed. Reading strategies of printed texts and their comprehension such as determining key ideas, drawing inferences, monitoring and repairing comprehension differ from hypertexts reading and comprehension. Reading and cognitive strategies of specialized hypertexts and their translation require new approaches to empower students with skills important for learning and professional development.
