Abstract

As a 21st century education strategy, the Next Generation Science Standards through STEAM project (NGSS) aims to increase children’s basic skills in STEM+Arts (creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving) and to develop teachers’ competence to effectively teach interdisciplinary art and science using a real-world context for fostering more creative and collaborative learning environments in schools. The project started with a needs assessment research carried out in six partner countries (Türkiye, Greece, Romania, Lithouania, and Bulgaria), which showed that preschool and primary school teachers have increased needs of training and resources to deliver STEAM lessons. Teachers also emphasized their need for practical examples and lesson plans that will ease their introduction to the STEAM approach.  Responding to these needs, experts built an online course which aims to introduce teachers to five teaching strategies that support the delivery of interdisciplinary STEAM+Arts lessons. These strategies are: Inquiry-based learning, Problem-based learning, Design Thinking, SCAMPER, and the Montessory approach. In this paper, we present a) the main results of the needs assessment analysis of the NGSS project, and b) the units of the AuReSEL online course, and it’s content.
