Jasper Cirkel is a research assistant at the University of Göttingen, Germany. After completing his Master in Education in Mathematics and Physics in 2015 he works on the topic of integrated science instruction.
Integrated natural science instruction teaches science in an interdisciplinary manner; the aspects of the subjects biology education, chemistry education and physics education are combined in an interdisciplinary, more broadly oriented approach for teaching and understanding of science concepts. Such an instruction is believed to stimulate students learning through the constructivist linking of existing knowledge and embedding educational subjects in realistic contexts. Interdisciplinary instruction acknowledges the fact that real world challenges are seldom treated with the means of a single scientific discipline. Rather than developing only single subject competencies students are encouraged to exhibit interdisciplinary problem solving skills to face ambiguous problems. Moreover, integrated science instruction is believed to foster student’s interest in science – a claim which needs further empirical research. However, another challenge is to prepare future teachers adequately for the interdisciplinary aspects of integrated natural science instruction.
